Shah Jahan built the red fort at Delhi on the banks of the Yamuna. It is a huge  structure which is spread over a vast area. It has huge wall all around. Those facing the Chandni chowk are higher than those facing the Yamuna. In spite of its vastness, the red fort has an attraction of its own. 

This place was built by most splendid ruler of the Mughals. It excelled the other Mughal places in the largeness of the conception, in the uniformity of its Aggrements and in the magnificence of its execution. Its different structure, like Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Rang Mahal, were decorated with pure white marble and inlaid with precious stones. That is why a person couplet has been inscribed in the Diwan-i-Khas which reads.

Shah Jahan completed the red fort in AD 1648 and held his first Darbar on 18th April 1648 AD. It is said that about one crore rupees was spent in those days to built this fort.
